I am a population geneticist working on the evolutionary genetics and biogeography of bats. I've published a number of papers in both open-access and subscription-based journals. As both an author, journal editor, and reviewer of publications, I would like to discuss with other attendees such questions as:
1) how do we encourage open-access publication while also making such venues accessible to authors lacking the funds to cover the substantial open-access fees?
2) what are some differences in the peer-review systems in different fields (e.g., sciences vs. humanities), and what best practices can we learn from each other?
3) how do we place more value on the critical work done by editors and reviewers?
